Tips for Praying with a Busy Schedule

Does it sometimes feel like there’s absolutely no time in your day to talk to God? A lot of people, especially those working full-time or caring for children all the time, feel like this– that prayer is just not high enough on the to-do list to push aside more important things for. In actuality, prayer should be the most important thing on your schedule, just as God should be central to your life. It’s integral that you make room for it in your day to maintain your connection with the Lord.

Grab a coffee (or tea) and read on for actionable tips you can implement to make room for talking to God in your day.

Put it on your calendar

Firstly, just as we pencil other important things into our calendars, you can mark prayer as an important priority. You could make a daily 07:30 appointment with the Lord, even if it’s just 5 minutes of your day. A visual reminder might be just the thing to remind you to connect with God that day.

Put praying on your calendar.

Find a sacred place

Secondly, having a special place to pray can signal to your brain that it’s time to be at peace and focus on connecting with Him. If you’ve ever seen the Christian film War Room, you’ll remember that Miss Clara shows Elizabeth a special closet she dedicates to prayer, which she names her War Room. You could create your own war room, or just dedicate a certain space to prayer.

Another example is the Jewish Tallit, worn during prayer and worship to create a closeness between one and God. Think about ways to create a sacred space between you and God.

Prayer group

Interestingly, a lot of churches have life groups and prayer groups dedicated to fellowship in prayer. Consider joining one of these, or start your own! The Bible says that praying with your community and others is powerful in James 5:16: “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Talk to Him like a best friend

Additionally, just like we text those important to us throughout the day, talk to God throughout the day. Tell him your innermost thoughts and fears, feelings, expectations, worries, and what you’re glad of. Not every prayer has to be weighted and important– God is always listening. The Bible says you should never stop praying, too, in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18; “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.!

Morning and evening prayer

Moreover, you might also try making prayer a morning or night event. Create quiet time for prayer in the morning as you get ready for the day. Perhaps you could pray as you go to sleep, telling God about your day and its happenings.

Prayer while doing chores

This one is easy because you can hit two birds with one stone. Pray for your coworkers while you’re doing laundry, for your family while doing the dishes, and for your overly stressed boss while vacuuming. You might also pray on your daily commute to work or cooking dinner.
