Supplication and Prayer
In the Bible, we are told: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” (Philippians 4:6-7) Many of us have heard the word in church, from family, or from someone else we know, but what does supplication mean, and how can we integrate it into our relationships with God?
Supplication is when we humble ourselves before God to plead for something we really need, like favour, money, or a miracle. These aren’t quick prayers we say before dinner or bedtime, they’re intentional, humble requests to Him. Humility is a huge part of getting our prayers answered.
Supplication provides the strength and courage to suffer and wait while we ask for relief. If we’re truly humble, we will ask in faith and continue to believe even when life doesn’t turn out as we had hoped. This is evidenced in James 1:5-8; “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.”
Praying in Supplication
To incorporate supplication into your prayer life, open your heart to being humble and cast all your anxieties on Him (1 Peter 5:7). God says that those who seek Him out will find Him. You can also supplicate in intercession (praying for others).
Supplication is asking God for something, whether that’s for grace, favour, or healing. If you need help with supplication or prayer, reach out to us by prayer request or a free phone call.
